Self-described as “a true prepster in a hip world” Dumbo Brooklyn resident Dabney Lee Woglom is a Matchbook girl through and through. We’ve been admiring her brightly colored home and paper goods for years and naturally jumped at the chance to feature her (And her sweet three-year-old triplets!) in these glossy virtual pages. In fall 2012 she opened her first brick-and-mortar boutique in her neighborhood and is already hatching plans for future locations. Join us as we take a peek at the cheerful space and get the dish from Dabney on her fabulous granny, love of the beach, and her favorite spot for margaritas with the girls.
You grew up on the West Coast, but have since made New York home. Do you still consider yourself a California girl?
I will always be a California girl at heart, even though my true love is New York. I definitely miss the warmer winters, but enjoy the actual seasons of the East Coast and think I appreciate them so much more. Although, one day I will retire in Montecito…A girl can dream!
Who in your life influenced your colorful aesthetic?
I'd have to say my Grandmother has been a huge influence on my style both professionally and personally. Her home was filled with color and happiness and was my favorite place to be when I was a child. She never shied away from colorful clothing and prints and encouraged me to do the same. She has a keen eye for style and always looks so put together. I simply adore her.
What are five adjectives you would use to describe the Dabney Lee brand?
Bright, fabulous, sophisticated, modern, and happy!
You make a multitude of products. What are some of your very favorite pieces?
Our Lucite trays are hands down my favorite Dabney Lee pieces. They are simple and functional and add an instant pop of color to your desk or dresser. I also have a weak spot of our Moderne line of stationery. I love the simplicity of your name on the front and a bright, bold pattern on the back. It makes me so happy to write letters.
Where do you go to get inspired?
The beach! The bright colors and relaxed setting really help me clear my mind and focus on the inspiration around me. From the colors of the ocean to the cute beach shops, there is nothing more inspiring.
How have your adorable triplets changed your life?
My life is hectic, crazy, wild, and so amazing. I feel incredibly blessed to be a mother of three. They are truly the loves of my life.
What inspired you to open a brick-and-mortar boutique?
Living and working in Dumbo, Brooklyn keeps me away from the city because my universe is here. So getting to the city to find great wrap and gifts was always a rushed errand for me, especially after the babies arrived. I would always think to myself how great it would be if we had a go-to shop in our neighborhood. So one day my husband said, "Why not open a shop in Dumbo?" So I did!
What is your favorite thing about being a shop owner?
I absolutely love chatting with everyone who walks though our door. I love hearing people say, "What a nice shop!" It makes me so very proud. I have really enjoyed meeting more people in our neighborhood and sharing stories about our kids. I love that my girlfriends pop in when they need a card, gift, or even a glass of wine after a hectic day – I keep our fridge fully stocked just in case.
Why inspired you to choose Dumbo as your location?
When Peter and I moved to New York we moved right to Dumbo. It was an up-and-coming neighborhood and not many people knew about it. We've been here nine years and have loved watching the neighborhood change in great ways. I started Dabney Lee in our apartment, then moved to our first studio right down the street from our apartment. So it only seemed fitting that my shop was in Dumbo…It will always be my favorite neighborhood.
